Body art

Body art is an art form that is made on the human body. Most often body art means painting pictures on a naked body (most often a naked body of a woman). Body art also includes piercing, tattooing, scarring and other extreme types of making pictures on the human body.

Piercing as one of the subdivisions of body art is insertion of metal objects like rings into holes made in the human body. Piercing is getting very popular among young people with deviant behaviour who are trying to mark their belonging to a certain subcultures like punks, rockers, Goths and so on. Although piercing is a modern way of adorning, its origins go back in the history. In ancient tribes piercing was a sign of a certain social position of a person.

Body painting is also a very old phenomenon. Body painting was and is still used in primitive tribes to indicate what position a person has. For example, a tribal chief has a lot of body painting. In modern times body painting is often seen as a revolt against old moral principles and resurrection of freedom. Body painting can often be seen not only in art exhibitions and performances, but also in football games, rave parties, in gothic subculture and among youth.

Scarring is a special way of leaving scars on the human body. Decorative scars in the form of a certain patterns are made with a scalpel or any other sharp object, although the methods of making scars can vary in different cases. The maker of a decorative scar is required to have certain knowledge about surgery and to have iron nerves.
