Digital painting

Digital painting is an art form similar to conventional painting but with the use of a computer, a digitizing tablet and a stylus, and software. Digital painting is a new tendency in art in general as it appeared approximately in 1995-1996 when first comparatively powerful computers able to represent a quality image were produced. The first work of digital painting is hard to define as it is difficult to single out the criteria that would allow us to give such a definition. In digital painting all conventional instruments of a painter are digitally imitated. Thus a computer represents a set of tools similar to the easel, paints and brushes for an artist. To create real works of art with the help of a computer a person should be familiar with all the experience of conventional painting, as well as have some personal skills of applying such knowledge (such as perspective, colour circles, highlights, reflexes and so on). Digital photography, where an existing image is modified by means of digital tools is closely connected with digital painting.

Most often digital painting it is used in production art, for example in conceptual design for movies, video games or television. In digital paining the same styles existing in conventional painting are used. There are both advantages of this type of art, for example the possibility to quickly remove unnecessary details and working in a well-organized environment, although its opponents claim that there is nothing as natural and perfect as conventional painting on a real canvas with a real brush.
